Rapid Transitions: Experiences with Accessibility and Special Education during the COVID-19 Crisis

The ongoing outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and ensuing preventative lock-down shelter-in-place policies enacted around world have caused unanticipated disruptions in delivery educational content accessibility services to children, youth adults with disabilities. rapid move online remote learning, socialization, therapeutic activities surfaced some inadequacies existing systems infrastructures as well opportunities for creating novel accessible solutions. We conducted semi-structured interviews nine special education teachers, therapists, community advocates, individuals disabilities capture their perspectives on delivering supporting children families during pandemic. Participants shared reflections experience those who they serve initial phases COVID-19 crisis challenges insights that this surfaced. Findings include a need better support facilitating learning experiences developing tactile modes engagement complement interactions, impact lack contingency plans specifically people crizes. participants also described clarity about future one most difficult aspects conclude discussion these findings directions research.
